Daredevils face charges for Empire State stunt

Daredevil couple face charges after climbing Empire State Building to propose during reckless stunt

A couple has been charged with felonies after they climbed the Empire State Building’s antenna for an engagement proposal.Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus were arraigned on charges of felony reckless endangerment and burglary related to the stunt.

Banner

The couple aimed to create a memorable moment, proclaiming their love with a banner at 443 metres above Manhattan.

Prosecutors noted that they also posed risks to others, especially law enforcement who responded to the incident.

Their actions were captured by news helicopters, showcasing the proposal against the city skyline.

Nikolau shared images of the climb and the engagement ring on her social media.

The court records showed that they had broken into a restricted area of the building to access the antenna.

The Empire State Building’s management labelled the climb as “unauthorised”, without commenting on any security interactions.

Nikolau and Beerkus were released without bail due to New York’s legal restrictions on bail conditions.

Their attorney remarked on the uniqueness of the proposal, acknowledging its dreamlike quality.

Daredevils have previously climbed the Empire State Building, including actor Jared Leto, who completed a sanctioned climb in 2023.

Charges against couple

The couple’s intentions were met with legal action rather than celebration.

Concerns have been raised about public safety due to these climbing stunts.

Witness accounts highlighted the spectacle, but officials emphasized the risks involved.

Public response has been mixed, with some expressing admiration for their adventurous spirit.

Discussions continue about the implications of such stunts on security measures in iconic locations.

The couple is expected to review evidence with their attorney as they prepare for their next legal steps.

As this situation unfolds, issues of safety and public perception remain at the forefront.
