China threatens retaliation against U.S. sanctions

China vows strong retaliation against U.S. sanctions targeting its businesses linked to Iran amid escalating tensions

China reacted strongly against new U.S. sanctions targeting Chinese entities over Iran ties. Beijing warned it will adopt necessary measures to protect its interests and accused the U.S. of destabilising the global financial system.Banner

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that cooperation with Iran is within international law and should remain unaffected.

The U.S. Treasury announced sanctions on over 60 individuals and entities, part of an effort dubbed “Operation Economic Outcast.”

The sanctions targeted small businesses from Hong Kong and China, but major banks suspected of aiding Iran’s oil trade were excluded.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned larger entities could still be targeted for facilitating transactions linked to Iranian oil.

The sanctions represent a critical moment in the fragile economic relationship between Washington and Beijing.

President Trump announced the initiative, stating his aim is to cut off economic support for the Iranian regime.

China remains Iran’s largest trading partner, reportedly purchasing around 90% of its crude exports, with bilateral trade valued at nearly $10 billion last year.

Chinese state media adopted a defiant stance, depicting U.S. reliance on sanctions as an addiction.

Despite pressures, the omission of major banks from the sanctions hinted at U.S. reluctance to escalate the economic confrontation with China.

The standoff occurs amid a U.S. naval blockade restricting Iran’s oil shipments and ahead of an important meeting between President Trump and President Xi Jinping.

Escalation of tensions

The sanctions come amid broader economic disruption related to U.S. and Israeli military actions in Iran.

Rising oil and freight costs have increased global inflation and strained supply chains.

Pakistan’s army chief recently visited Tehran seeking to mediate in U.S.-Iran tensions, announcing significant progress in discussions.

Iran has indicated plans to target alternative oil-shipping routes if regional states cooperate with the U.S. sanctions.

China, as a major buyer of Iranian oil, is closely monitoring developments.
