China found guilty of Uyghur genocide

Published

on

An unofficial tribunal in the UK has determined the Chinese government is guilty of committing genocide against the Uyghur people in Xinjiang province

Dubbed the Uyghur Tribunal, the committee cited the use of sterilisation and birth control measures as the main reason why they reached this conclusion.

Geoffrey Nice is a prominent barrister and chaired the tribunal, and he is satisfied that China has carried out “a deliberate, systematic and concerted policy”.

Nice believes the PRC is intentionally trying to achieve a “long-term reduction of Uyghur and other ethnic minority populations”.

The committee also holds Chinese President Xi Jinping accountable for the actions, saying the leader bears “primary responsibility”.

The findings have no legal force and are not binding on ministers, but the committee intends for the findings to increase the body of evidence around the allegations of abuse by China and reach an independent conclusion.
