China accuses U.S. of COVID investigation smear campaign

Published

Ever since Covid-19 started spreading in the Chinese city of Wuhan, there has been much debate about where the virus originated from

It was originally assumed that the disease made the jump from animals to humans in a seafood market in Wuhan.

But there have also been accusations that Covid leaked out from a laboratory.

The latest claim of this nature comes from FBI Director Christopher Wray.

In an interview with Fox News, he said that the agency have “assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident in Wuhan”.

He’s also accused Beijing of trying to scupper investigations into how the pandemic started.

These comments come just days after the Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. Energy Department has now assessed – with low confidence – that the virus came from a lab.

Beijing has categorically denied any claims that the virus leaked out from a laboratory – accusing certain parties of trying to smear China.

They’ve also pointed to an investigation from the World Health Organisation back in 2021 that said the laboratory leak theory was “extremely unlikely”.

These claims come amidst the backdrop of increasing U.S.-China tensions and these latest comments from the FBI director will do little to calm the situation.
