Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is out of the race after failing to gain enough votes to progress to April’s run-off

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has lost her re-election bid, failing to gain enough votes to progress through to a run-off election.

It’s a stunning fall from grace for a candidate who won all 50 of the city’s wards just four years ago.

Experts say issues with a powerful teacher’s union and rising crime rates throughout the city have ultimately led to her demise.

The Associated Press has declared Paul Vallas, a more moderate Democrat and Brandon Johnson, a liberal teacher’s union organiser, have secured the two spots in April’s run-off.

Lightfoot ran in third place and conceded the race shortly before 9pm local time.

The outgoing mayor told supporters that she has congratulated her opponents and that she appreciated the love she has been shown during the campaign. #trending #featured
