Boris Johnson under fire over BBC appointment

The BBC’s Chairman Richard Sharp once helped Johnson with a personal loan

Boris Johnson is facing criticism after it emerged the individual he selected to chair the BBC previously helped Britain’s former PM with his own personal finances.

The Labour Party is calling on the nation’s watchdog to examine the recruitment process which led to Richard Sharp securing the role.

Sharp is a former Goldman Sachs banker and The Sunday Times says he helped Johnson sort out a guarantee on a loan worth up to £800,000.

The former PM has denied any wrongdoing.

As has Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who says the appointment was made on merit.

On Sunday, Johnson arrived in Ukraine for talks in Kyiv with Volodymyr Zelensky.

Johnson says: “The suffering of the people of Ukraine has gone on for too long”.
