Australia enacts law taxing tech giants for failing to negotiate news deals with local media outlets

Tech levy introduced
Revenues collected from this initiative are earmarked for local Australian news organisations that contribute to user engagement on these tech platforms.
The levy targets companies with a “significant” online presence and local ad revenue exceeding A$250 million ($178 million).
Platforms can evade the tax by negotiating contracts with at least eight publishers before their financial reporting period ends.
Such agreements must support news content production or the distribution of existing news content from the publishers.
Expenditures with larger publishers yield a 150% offset, while those with smaller outlets provide a 200% offset.
Each individual deal is limited to 25% of a platform’s tax responsibility.
The government has underscored the necessity for platforms to engage in commercial agreements before the end of their reporting cycle.
This legislation marks a significant milestone for the sustainability of Australian news services and journalism.
Legislation passed
The introduction of the News Bargaining Incentive reflects growing tensions between tech firms and media companies over revenue sharing.
