Biden moves forward with Infrastructure Bill after threatening to veto

Published

on

US President Joe Biden says he ‘has a deal’ on the Infrastructure Bill after meeting with a bipartisan group of senators.

A senior White House adviser refused to answer if US President Joe Biden will sign the bipartisan Infrastructure Bill package if it arrives at his desk without a larger Democratic package attached.

The question follows comments by President Biden last week that created a firestorm, almost jeopardising the bill entirely.

On Thursday, Biden announced he would not sign the bipartisan deal if the larger Democratic proposal did not reach his desk

However, on Saturday the President backflipped, releasing a statement saying he would sign the bipartisan deal and that he had not intended to imply otherwise.

Senator Rob Portman says he was “blindsided” by Biden’s comments and is “very glad to see the president clarify his remarks”.

“It’s very clear that both parties can move forward with a Bipartisan Bill that’s broadly popular.”

Meanwhile, White House advisor Cederic Richmond says Democrats and Republicans must ‘hurry up and agree’.
