Who is the new US House Speaker?

Republican Mike Johnson becomes House Speaker

In a highly anticipated vote, Republican Mike Johnson has been elected as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, ending a three-week-long period of uncertainty within the chamber.

Johnson’s election came with a narrow 220 to 209 party-line vote, following the removal of Kevin McCarthy from the position on October 3rd.

Mike Johnson, a conservative with limited leadership experience, now assumes the powerful role, which had remained vacant.

In his post-election statement, Johnson expressed the intention to restore the House’s effectiveness in its duties.

Among his first actions, Speaker Johnson introduced legislation demonstrating support for Israel, particularly in light of increased tensions and conflicts in the Middle East.

Notably, Mike Johnson is recognised for leading an unsuccessful appeal by 126 House Republicans to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

Despite his relatively limited tenure, he now holds one of the most prominent positions in the House.

In his address, Johnson pledged to address overdue spending legislation and prevent a government shutdown when funding expires on November 17.

Additionally, he aims to prioritise border security and initiate a bipartisan commission to address the national debt. There are also important decisions to be made regarding funding for Israel, Ukraine, and U.S. border security.

A recent analysis reveals a jaw dropping surge in the cost of American homes.

Since the start of 2020, U.S. home prices have surged 47% easily outstripping the gains seen in recent decades.

On top of that, home price growth so far this decade is on the verge of surpassing all the growth seen in the 2000s.

Many experts believe this decade’s housing market frenzy was ignited by a perfect storm — the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic triggering an unprecedented rush among buyers.
