Steve Harwell, the lead singer of the popular US band Smash Mouth, has passed away at the age of 56.

The news was confirmed by the band’s manager, Robert Hayes, who stated that Harwell was in the final stages of liver failure and was receiving end-of-life care at his home in Idaho. Harwell died surrounded by family and friends.

Smash Mouth gained fame in the 1990s and 2000s with hit songs like “All Star,” “Walkin’ on the Sun,” and “I’m a Believer.” Despite their early success, Harwell retired from the band in 2021 due to physical and mental health issues, including struggles with alcoholism and health conditions like cardiomyopathy and a neurological condition affecting his memory and speech.

The band’s manager praised Harwell’s unwavering determination and ambition, as he achieved pop stardom with limited musical experience.

Smash Mouth’s music, known for its fusion of pop, ska, surf, and punk elements, remains memorable, with “All Star” in particular enjoying lasting popularity thanks to its inclusion in the original Shrek movie and various internet memes.

Steve Harwell’s passing marks the end of an era for Smash Mouth, a band that left a significant mark on the music scene with their catchy and distinctive style.
