UK’s final evacuation flight departs Sudan as the United Nations calls for humanitarian corridors

The final UK evacuation flight has now left Sudan.

The Foreign Office says the last flight has left Port Sudan and no more will be running.

The airlift began amid a tentative ceasefire last week and has seen more than 2,300 people rescued.

Meanwhile, the United Nations aid chief is calling for face-to-face meetings with Sudan’s warring parties to secure the safe passage of humanitarian assistance.

The fighting in Sudan erupted on April 15 and is involves two rival groups: the Sudanese army and a paramilitary Rapid Support Force, known as the RSF.

About one-third of Sudan’s population of 46 million was already in need of humanitarian assistance before the current conflict began.

As it stands, the fighting has displaced hundreds of thousands internally, and there doesn’t seem to be an immediate end in sight.

On top of this, the UN fears the violence risks causing a humanitarian catastrophe that could spill over into other countries.

Several agency staff have already lost their lives in the conflict. #trending #featured
