Fumio Kishida made the unannounced foreign trip to Kyiv to pledge support

As China’s President Xi Jinping made waves by meeting with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Japan’s PM Fumio Kishida is in Kyiv – promising unwavering support to Ukraine.

Both are on strategic foreign visits on opposing sides of the conflict.

Kishida says his nation will continue to support Volodymyr Zelensky, with the two leaders even speaking about reconstruction costs and humanitarian aid.

Meanwhile, in Moscow, Xi has been described by Putin as a friend and a partner.

While China may insist it is neutral when it comes to this conflict, it’s looking more and more likely the nation is siding with Russia.

When it comes to Kishida – it’s very rare for a Japanese leader to make an unannounced foreign trip and the PM is the first to visit a country in conflict since World War II.

The visit was kept a secret until just before his arrival early on Tuesday, with officials citing security concerns.
