Rishi Sunak ‘up for the fight’ on migrant crossings

More than 45,000 people entered the U.K. via Channel crossings last year

U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says he is “up for the fight” as migrant crossings along the English Channel soar.

The comments follow Home Secretary Suella Braverman announcing new proposed migrant legislation during divisive debate in Parliament.

More than 45,000 people entered the U.K. via Channel crossings last year, up from about 300 in 2018.

Labour says the Tories’ latest plans are like “groundhog day” and a “con”.

But it’s not just opposition MPs who have criticised the plans.

The UN’s refugee agency, the UNHCR, says the proposed legislation is essentially an “asylum ban”.

But the government believes stopping small boats is a key issue for voters Sunak has made it one of his top five priorities.

Standing behind a lectern branded with the slogan “stop the boats”, the Prime Minister confirmed the new proposed law, which will see illegal migrants deported “within weeks”.
