Fears for the lives of dozens after a freight train and an oncoming passenger train collided in northern Greece.

Reports suggest at least 16 people have died, with many more injured.

The collision occurred near Tempe, around 380km north of Athens, resulting in the derailment of several train cars.

Police say at least three of the derailed cars caught fire.

Vehicles from the fire and ambulance services are at scene, sent from several nearby towns to help transport injured passengers and free those still trapped in the wreckage.

Government officials say the army has also been contacted to assist in the rescue efforts, with two additional hospitals in the nearby city of Larissa placed in emergency duty. #trending #featured
