Monterey Park shooter, Huu Can Tran, found dead by police

The hunt for a gunman who killed 10 people and injured at least 10 more has ended. Police found 72-year-old Huu Can Tran dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a white van.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna identified the individual and said no other suspects were at large.

“Officers retreated and requested several tactical teams to respond,” Sheriff Luna said.

“Two armoured vehicles responded and were able to restrict the van’s movement.

“At 12:52pm (local time) they approached the vehicle and determined the suspect sustained a self-inflicted wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.”

It’s believed all of the victims are over the age of 50. Seven of those wounded in the attack remain in hospital.

Authorities say Huu Can Tran was carrying a semi-automatic pistol with an extended magazine, and a second handgun.

Local Congresswoman Judy Chu said she still has questions about the attack: “What was the motive for this shooter? Did he have a mental illness? Was he a domestic violence abuser? How did he gets these guns and was it through legal means or not?”

“What I want to do here is to say to the community: feel safe,” Ms Chu added.

“You are no longer in danger because this shooter is gone.”

The incident has been felt in Asian American communities right across the United States. Many cities sent extra officers to watch over celebrations.
