Jacinda Ardern has been the nation’s leader since 2017

Jacinda Ardern has announced she will be stepping down as New Zealand’s prime minister.

Holding back tears, the PM conceded she does not have the energy to seek re-election.

“I had hoped that I would find what I needed to carry on over that period but, unfortunately, I haven’t, and I would be doing a disservice to New Zealand to continue.”

Ardern says she had the support of her family to continue in the role but they were happy with the final decision.

It’s also been confirmed country’s residents will go to the polls for a federal election on October 14.

During the media conference, the outgoing leader also announced her plans to “finally” marry her fiancé, Clarke Gayford.

Ardern has been New Zealand’s Prime Minister since 2017.
