Chinese travellers are racing to renew their passports after the country’s borders reopened

Travellers who leave China will no longer have to quarantine when they return home under Beijing’s latest easing of Covid-19 restrictions.

The border reopening means Chinese nationals who live overseas will be reunited with family and friends after several years.

As borders opened, China’s currency and stock markets strengthened. Investors are rallying the reopening could pump one of the world’s largest economies, which is currently experiencing its lowest growth in nearly half a century.

However, flights out of China are limited as airlines continue to assess their schedules and travel arrangements.

The European Union has also imposed pre-departure testing requirements on Chinese travellers.

International arrivals into Europe will need to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test up to 48 hours before departure.

China is currently facing its largest spike in locally-acquired Covid-19 infections since the start of the pandemic.
