Brazil’s former president has been hospitalised following his supporters protesting across the capital

Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro has been hospitalised after protests engulfed the nation.

Bolsonaro’s far-right supporters invaded the seat of power on Sunday, including Brazil’s Congress, Presidential Palace and Supreme Court.

According to his wife, Bolsonaro is in a U.S. hospital and is fighting abdominal pain. The pair have reportedly been in Florida since the end of last year.

Over 1,500 people have been detained because of the protests.

Bolsonaro lost Brazil’s presidential election to his left-wing opponent,  Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in October.

However, he has previously blamed a corrupt voting system for the result.

Many of his supporters have refused to accept the result and some have been camping outside army buildings around the country, where they have called for a military intervention.

More than 200 arrests were made and no deaths were reported.

President Lula called the rioters “vandals and fascists” and promised to respond with the “force of the law”.

He has blamed Bolsonaro for inciting the violence. “Everybody knows there are various speeches of the ex-President encouraging this,” he said.

Bolsonaro has denied any involvement Sunday’s attack, and has refused to concede October’s election loss.

While X still boasts 550 million monthly active users globally, Threads’ focus on user experience and avoidance of real-time and political content could position it as a formidable competitor moving forward.
