Who will face criminal charges over the Jan. 6 Capitol riot?

The chairman of the January 6 House Committee expects the panel to make criminal referrals to the Department of Justice.

Bennie Thompson says the panel is yet to formalise its decision, as well as which individuals will be subjected to the referrals.

Committee members previously signaled the possibility of sending multiple criminal referrals to the Justice Department involving former President Donald Trump, and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

It’s all based on evidence uncovered while investigating the events surrounding the attack on the Capitol.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says the attack on the Capitol must never happen again.

Former White House strategist Steve Bannon was sentenced to four months in prison for contempt in October.

Another former West Wing aide, Peter Navarro didn’t testify to the panel, citing executive privilege, and is awaiting trial.

It’s unclear what charges the committee is entertaining.

It’s illegal to lie to Congress, for example, but such charges are rarely brought.

The Justice Department has brought charges against at least 955 people who allegedly participated in the riot.
