St Louis has been rocked by a school shooting, leaving at least three dead and six injured

At least three people have died and six others injured following a shooting at a St Louis high school.

The gunman entered the Central Visual & Performing Arts High School around 9am local time on Monday.

Authorities say the building was locked and it remains unclear just how the man gained entry.

Police ‘quickly stopped’ the suspect, with a gunfire exchange leading to his death.

Witnesses say the individual, believed to be in his 20s, was carrying a ‘long gun’.

His motive or connection with the school is yet to be determined.

Adrienne Bolden is a freshman at the school and told NBC News he and his classmates had to jump out of a window to escape.

St. Louis Police Chief Michael Sack said the school’s security guards managed to slow down the intruder and bought authorities much needed time.

“This is a heart-breaking day for all of us,” Sack continued.

Mayor Tishaura Jones also addressed the public during a media conference, saying “our children shouldn’t have to experience this.”

“They shouldn’t have to go through active shooter drills in case something happens. And unfortunately, that happened today,” she added.
