More wild weather on the way as Sydney floods

Published

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has warned that more wild weather is on the way, as flooding hits Sydney

One person has died following torrential rain, flash flooding, and damaging winds.

The weather crisis has forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes, with warnings more wild weather is on the way.

The Emergency Services Minister says “this is a life-threatening emergency situation”.

In a matter of 24 hours, there have been 83 flood rescues.

Major roads have been cut off and people are being warned to evacuate before it’s too late.

Experts say the floods have been worsened by climate change and a La Nina weather season.

While the east coast low which sparked the deluge has weakened, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) is still forecasting up to 120mm of rain in the harbour city.

The SES is warning residents in low-lying areas near the Hawkesbury River downstream of Wisemans Ferry, north west of Sydney, to evacuate.

Closer to the city, people in some parts of Penrith, North Richmond and Windsor have been warned they may need to leave.

It’s the third time this year many of the areas being inundated.

Reserve Bank of Australia plans to ban credit card surcharges despite banks warning of potential higher fees and weaker rewards.

In Short:
– The RBA plans to ban surcharges on debit and credit card transactions, supported by consumer group Choice.
– Major banks oppose the ban, warning it could lead to higher card fees and reduced rewards for credit card users.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) intends to implement a ban on surcharges associated with debit and credit card transactions. Consumer advocacy group Choice endorses this initiative, arguing that it is unjust for users of low-cost debit cards to incur similar fees as credit card holders.Banner

The major banks, however, are opposing this reform. They caution that the removal of surcharges could prompt customers to abandon credit cards due to diminished rewards.

A final decision by the RBA is anticipated by December 2025.
