Why Israel is set to hold fifth election in under four years

Israel is set to hold its fifth general election in under four years, with the ruling government conceding it does not have the power to carry on

Its expected an election will take place in October, with former prime minister and current opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu vowing to return to office.

The government’s announcement comes after weeks of speculation the coalition was on the brink of political collapse.

Current PM Naftali Bennet says all attempts to stabilise his coalition have been exhausted.

The government risked losing a key vote next week after a member of Bennet’s own parliamentary party stood aside, leaving the coalition as a minority.

A bill to dissolve the nation’s the parliament will go to a vote next week, and if it passes, Bennett will make way for centrist politician Yair Lapid to become interim PM.

The two men formed the coalition party last year after successfully ousting Israel’s longest-serving leader, Netanyahu.

A majority was formed through the combination of eight individual parties, all united by the desire to remove Netanyahu from office.
