More people turning away from news for their mental health

Published

on

Don’t turn your devices off yet this isn’t another depressing news story, although it may be for journalists

New research is showing that an increasing number of people are turning away from the news because it lowers their mood.

About four in ten people claim they regularly avoid the news a 10 per cent increase compared to 5 years ago.

In the U.K. and Brazil these numbers were even larger with just under half of Britons and over half of Brazilians shunning the news.

This seems to be a trend amongst younger generations with 36 per cent of people under 35 saying the news affected their mood.

The issue is thought to have been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nearly half of the people sampled criticised the repetitiveness of news, particularly with politics and Covid-19 coverage.
