Police have launched a probe into an assault on Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp

Police are investigating an assault on Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp.

Authorities say he was assaulted by a fan at the end of the Championship play-off final second leg at Nottingham Forest.

Television footage showed a member of the crowd charge at Sharp during a pitch invasion while the player stood on the sidelines.

According to his manager the sports star required stitches for his injuries.

Police say they are conducting enquiries as they continue their investigation.
