New Harry Potter film removes gay lines for China

Warner Bros says it removed two “homosexual” lines from its new Harry Potter film “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” prior to the movie’s release in China

Six seconds of dialogue between the two of the leading characters, Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindewald, played by Jude Law and Mads Mikkelsen, have been cut.

The lines are “I was in love with you” and “the summer Gellert and I fell in love”, referring to the gay romance between the two characters.

China is the world’s biggest movie market, and the nation’s government has been increasingly cracking down on censoring media.

In a statement, Warner Bros says it’s “committed to safeguarding the integrity of every film release”… and this includes making cuts to respond sensitively to a variety of markets.

The company added that a six-second cut was requested, but regardless of this, the spirit of the film remains intact.
