New Delhi trash fire leaves residents gasping for air

A fire at a landfill in Delhi is continuing to burn, as toxic smoke blankets surrounding areas

There are reports many local residents have been gasping for air after the blaze started burning on Monday.

While the cause currently remains unknown, fires in the past have been triggered by trash combusting.

Firefighters say they are getting close to extinguishing the flames, but the environment is making it difficult.

Uneven surfaces and large trash sinkholes mean it’s dangerous for authorities to access the site – and to make matters worse, temperatures in Delhi are sitting around 40 degrees Celsius.

The fire broke out just a week after New Delhi was ranked as the world’s most polluted capital.
