British man first patient to receive 3D-printed eye

The eye provides “clearer definition and real depth to the pupil”

3D printers have been known to produce a range of products from furniture to even weaponry… and for the first time they have been used to print a 3D eye.

In a world first… a British man has become the first person ever to be fitted with an eye made by a 3D printer.

The left eye was was transferred to Steve Verze in a London hospital on Thursday after having tried it for size earlier this month.

The event marks the first fully digital prosthetic eye created for a patient.

Compared to other prosthetics the 3D printed eye allows “clearer definition and real depth to the pupil”.

Alternatives prevent light from passing into the “full depth” of the eye as they are made with a disk with a hand-painted iris.

The result is a more realistic look and a less invasive procedure where the patient’s eye as well as their eye socket is digitally scanned to ensure a consistent size and look.
