Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Sudan, protesting against last month’s coup – but demonstrations have turned deadly, with authorities shooting dead at least 14 people.

Protesters were met with live rounds of bullets, fired by security forces.

Authorities cut off mobile phone communications and also dispersed tear gas into the crowd.

In a statement, the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors stated that security forces “used live bullets heavily in different areas of the capital” and that there are “tens of gunshot injuries, some of them in serious condition”.

The CCSD also said security forces had arrested injured people inside Khartoum hospitals.

Protesters are demanding the coup end, and request a full handover to civilian rule and for the coup leaders to be taken to court.
