Capitol attack: Former Trump aide facing criminal contempt referral

The committee tasked with investigating the January 6 Capitol Riots says it will pursue criminal charges against former Trump aide, Steve Bannon

Bannon had previously been called to testify before the congressional committee, but he never appeared, prompting the committee’s head to hold a vote to hold him in contempt.

The consequences of this form of contempt include a fine and up to one year in prison, as Democrats say the former aide is attempting to stall the investigation.

Bannon was Trump’s chief strategist and was fired from his role back in 2017 prior to the Capitol riots taking place.

the chair of the committee says “Bannon has declined to cooperate and is hiding behind the former President’s insufficient, blanket, and vague statements regarding privileges he has chosen to invoke”.

There will be a business meeting next week, which is the first in a series of steps that needs to be followed to move forward with the contempt claim.
