Max Verstappen slams Liam Lawson for FP2 clash

Max Verstappen criticises Liam Lawson’s “not smart” driving after Mexico GP practice clash damages both cars

Max Verstappen has expressed disappointment with Liam Lawson after their collision during second practice for the Mexico Grand Prix, stating it was not a “very smart” move considering Lawson’s uncertain future in Formula 1.The incident occurred when both drivers went wheel to wheel in the stadium sector, resulting in debris on the track and a brief red flag.

Verstappen attempted to pass down the inside of Turn 12, but Lawson followed with a similar move, causing Verstappen to go off track.

When questioned by Sky Sports about whether the clash was unlucky, Verstappen responded that it was not merely bad luck but rather could have been avoided with smarter behaviour.

Verstappen’s session was compromised, finishing fifth and 0.311s behind pacesetter Charles Leclerc, which included damage from the collision.

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies acknowledged the session disruption and noted the car damage caused by the incident.

There is a sense of urgency as Verstappen and the team look to rectify the car’s performance for the upcoming race.

Valuable points are at stake for Lawson, who finished ninth, trailing Leclerc by 0.628s, aiming for a top position in the standings with 77 points.

Despite a successful campaign this season, Lawson’s position for 2027 remains uncertain given his placement at Red Bull’s sister team.

Adding to the uncertainty is F2 title contender Nikola Tsolov, considered a strong prospect for Red Bull going forward.

Mekies remarked that the incident was unnecessary, emphasising the need to focus on the damaged car ahead of further practice sessions.

Race implications

The collision may impact both drivers’ performances and futures in the competitive environment of Formula 1.

Preparations will be crucial for Verstappen and Red Bull as they aim to recover from this setback.

Team dynamics also play a significant role as Lawson navigates his standing amidst potential changes at Red Bull.

Adjustment and strategic planning will be essential as both drivers head into the Mexico Grand Prix.
