RBA faces inflation challenge as labour market softening looms amidst wage growth concerns and potential rate hikes
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is facing a challenging inflation outlook, with potential for another rate hike in November.
David Scutt from StoneX highlights the RBA’s focus on inflation, stating, “Hope is not a strategy.”
Scutt argues that the RBA is considering softening the labour market more than usual to control inflation.
He explains that the Deputy Governor’s recent comments suggest a significant upside risk to inflation, putting pressure on upcoming data to prove otherwise.
Wage pressures and economic risks
Scutt warns that strong wage increases, particularly in lower-paying industries, could exacerbate inflationary pressures. He notes that while societal needs justify wage hikes, they risk pushing up expectations across the board, which the economy cannot currently support.
The RBA’s focus on inflation could lead to substantial economic damage, especially for highly leveraged homeowners.
Scutt points out that the RBA’s narrow path strategy, aiming to maintain employment gains while controlling inflation, may not be sustainable.
He also highlights the global context, with protests over rising prices occurring in Europe, though not yet in Australia.
The RBA’s limited tools mean it cannot address these broader societal concerns, which fall under fiscal authorities’ purview.
In the tech sector, Scutt observes excitement around AI investments, with companies like Meta driving growth.
However, he cautions that any moderation in capital expenditure could impact the supply chain, affecting economic growth.
Looking ahead, Scutt advises watching upcoming data closely, as it will be crucial for determining the RBA’s next move.
The potential for a rate hike remains, contingent on whether inflation data aligns with the RBA’s expectations.
