Tabcorp has reportedly approached DAZN about acquiring Foxtel, raising questions about the future of Australian sports broadcasting and the growing crossover between media and wagering.
On Media Movers, host Ahron Young and co-host James Manning examine what could be behind the reported approach, why Foxtel might appeal to Tabcorp and whether a deal could reshape the industry.
Tabcorp operates wagering services and the Sky Racing network. Acquiring Foxtel could expand its presence in sports broadcasting, giving it access to a major subscription television business and valuable sports content, including coverage of Australian sporting competitions.
For DAZN, the reported approach comes less than two years after its $3.4 billion acquisition of Foxtel.
The development has prompted questions about its long-term Australian strategy and whether it could reconsider its position in the market.
However, DAZN chief executive Shay Segev has reportedly told staff the company is pleased with Foxtel’s performance and that the business is not for sale.
With no confirmed deal, the situation remains uncertain. Any potential transaction would raise significant questions about sports rights, streaming, wagering and the future direction of Australia’s media landscape.
