Dean Landy discusses Musana Global’s community models promoting self-sustainability and local empowerment in East Africa

In Short:
– Dean Landy and Musana Global aim to create self-sustaining communities in East Africa, merging efforts for greater impact.
– The organisation now generates over 100% of its operational costs locally, focusing on empowering communities through investment.

Musana Global is reshaping traditional charity in East Africa, with locally generated income now covering more than 100% of its operational expenses.

Architect and founder Dean Landy established One Heart in Kenya 19 years ago to support vulnerable children and build self-sustaining communities.

A strategic merger with Musana Global has since expanded its reach to more than 350,000 people, including 2,500 children receiving scholarships, while employing 900 local staff.

Rather than relying on fundraising for daily operations, Musana Global directs external funding towards capital investments in schools, hospitals and other infrastructure designed to generate income and support future community development.

Landy says empowering local leaders and businesses is essential to creating lasting change, shifting the focus from traditional charity to investing in people and restoring dignity.

He also highlights the importance of social infrastructure, including relationships, community connections and a sense of belonging, arguing these are just as vital as physical buildings and facilities.

By integrating healthcare, education and enterprise, Musana Global aims to create communities where people can access essential services, build economic opportunities and sustain their own development.
