Strait negotiations

Trump highlighted in a post on Truth Social that Iran’s demand for compensation was met with his own demand for reparations from Iran.

The difficulty of reaching an agreement is apparent as neither side appears ready to accept the other’s conditions.

As a reaction, oil prices increased, with Brent crude rising 4.6% to $87.

Trump also mentioned the need for Iran to pay for casualties linked to various conflicts and encouraged protests against the Iranian government.

Furthermore, Trump cited the October 2000 attack on the USS Cole, indicating Iran’s responsibility for compensation despite the attack being attributed to al Qaeda.

Iran claims an agreement with Oman on shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz is close but stressed U.S. conditions must be met first.

Before the war, the strait facilitated about a fifth of global oil transport, but closure has raised oil prices and inflation rates.

Trump’s pressure

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson indicated that discussions with Oman have made progress, focusing on shipping logistics.

Despite this, U.S. officials have refused any deal that permits Iran to charge for access to the strait.

Recent military efforts from the U.S. have not effectively diminished Iran’s control over the region.

Tensions remain high as Iran retaliates with missile strikes and drone attacks, targeting foreign interests in the area.
