Meta trial approaches

With the settlements, Meta stands as the only defendant in the upcoming trial scheduled for June 15 in California.

YouTube stated it had resolved the matter amicably, pledging to enhance age-appropriate products.

Snap echoed this sentiment, calling the resolution a positive outcome.

The school district had sought over $60 million to fund a long-term mental health program and address the impact of social media use among its students.

The lawsuit is notable as the first of around 1,200 similar cases prepared for trial, highlighting a significant trend in legal challenges against social media platforms.

A recent jury verdict in March already found Meta and YouTube negligent in a separate case, awarding $6 million in damages to a plaintiff harmed by their addictive features.

Both Meta and Google plan to appeal that ruling, with Meta asserting that social media addiction is not a legitimate concern.

With the trial approaching, the unresolved question is whether Meta will choose to settle or become the first platform to face a school district in court.
