Why the White House needs a plan to combat vaccine misinformation
As vaccine hesitancy continues to grow in the US, the White House is working on plans to prevent the spread of lies and misinformation surrounding Covid-19 jabs
This follows some Republican lawmakers publicly vocalising their doubts about the safety of vaccines.
It’s anticipated that US President Joe Biden will start tackling some of the falsehoods himself, as the Delta variant runs rampant throughout the country.
In addition to this, well known US surgeon General Doctor Vivek Murthy will also make an appearance at the White House in the coming days.
It’s expected he will discuss how the level of vaccine misinformation is now in itself a public health issue.
Key officials are aware that if they take steps that anger Republicans and vaccine sceptics, this may alienate these individuals further.
However it’s likely that the administration will move to take a harder stance in the coming days, and start to call out Republican elected officials and social media platforms spreading lies.

Singer and actress Olivia Rodrigo, known for her top charting debut album “Sour” is partnering with President Joe Biden to encourage people, especially teens, to get vaccinated—a move by the White House to increase vaccination rates.
White House officials have cited Rodrigo’s popularity among young people and her influencer status with over 28 million followers on social media as part of the reason for her attendance at the White House.
Only 24.9% of Americans between the ages of 12 and 15, and 37.1% of Americans between the ages of 16 and 17 fully vaccinated.
Last month, President Biden warned people to get vaccinated amid growing numbers of the highly transmissible delta variant saying, it is “particularly dangerous” for young people

Nuclear weapon testing, once crucial for understanding weapon effects and military planning, has diminished. Since World War II, nuclear tests have largely focused on developing new designs. Significant environmental and health concerns led to a moratorium on atmospheric testing in the early 1960s and the Partial Test Ban Treaty in 1963.
Many countries, including the US, stopped explosive testing in the 1990s. Technological advancements allowed nations to develop nuclear weapons without the need for actual explosions.
Proliferation Risks
Nuclear proliferation continues, with all nine nuclear-armed states investing heavily in modernising their arsenals. This raises concerns about lowered thresholds for using such weapons.
Recent conflicts involving nuclear threats have escalated, and the number of nuclear weapons operationally available has begun to rise again. Russia has tested advanced nuclear weapons, while China is rapidly expanding its military capabilities.
The New START Treaty, which confines the nuclear capabilities of the US and Russia, is set to expire soon, with no successor treaty negotiations underway.
The Doomsday Clock has moved closer to midnight this year, highlighting the heightened dangers facing the world today.
