Sunak heads to Kyiv, promises more support

Published

Germany is offering Warsaw the Patriot missile defence system to help secure its airspace after a stray missile crashed in Poland last week.

The German government is also offering its neighbour further help in air policing with German Eurofighters after the incident, which initially raised fears that the war in Ukraine could spill across the border.

The missile that hit Poland last week, killing two people, appeared to have been fired by Ukraine’s air defences rather than a Russian strike.

NATO has moved to strengthen air defences in eastern Europe since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

It comes as U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made a visit to Ukraine and offered the nation specialised support in the form of army medics and engineers.

Sunak met face-to-face with President Vlodomir Zelensky – and pledged defence aid that specifically targets Russia’s warfare in the sky.

The equipment short list includes: anti-aircraft guns, plus radars and anti-drone gear. Some of that will specifically target deadly the Iranian kamikaze drones that have been deployed in major cities recently.

Why OPEC policy decisions will have a major impact on oil prices

Published

on

Despite the fall in oil prices, OPEC and its allies policy decisions can have a major impact on oil prices.

In May 2023, the total number of rigs drilling for oil and gas was already down by around 7% when compared with its peak in December 2022.

Slower drilling activity eventually translates into slower production growth, creating a delay of up to 6 months.

In the meantime, high levels of production are keeping inventories elevated, especially in the case of gas, which is keeping prices under pressure.

OPEC and its allies are weighing the possibility of further oil supply cuts, despite the fall in oil prices.

OPEC+ and its allies led by Russia, pumps around 40% of the world’s crude.

So, its policy decisions can have a major impact on oil prices.

Bloomberg’s Senior Oil and Gas Analyst Fernando Valle joins us to discuss.
