5.9 magnitude earthquake hits Iran

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake has hit northwestern Iran, killing at least three people and injuring more than 900 in the region, near the border with Turkey

 
Hundreds are seeking shelter from freezing winter conditions in evacuation centres as more than 20 aftershocks rattled the region.

People were seen wrapped in blankets and huddling around fires in the snow-dusted region.

The earthquake caused major damage to residential buildings in 70 villages, destroying houses to dust.

Rescuers cleared the rubble to free those trapped in the area around 800 kilometres northwest of the capital.

Iran’s Red Crescent Society announced the search and rescue operations had finished, with no more survivors or bodies believed to be trapped.

Scenes from a local hospital shows the high number of patients as all the facility’s rooms are packed with the injured.
