Why is TikTok so difficult to ban in the United States?

The Biden administration has been under pressure to ban the popular Chinese-owned social media app TikTok.

 
Calls are growing louder from many lawmakers and national security hawks to ban TikTok, over fears the app could censure content, influence users, and give Americans’ personal data to Beijing.

But the Chinese tech company, ByteDance—which owns TikTok— denies the allegations.

So far Montana has become the first U.S. state to ban TikTok after the governor signed legislation prohibiting mobile application stores from offering the app within the state starting next year.
