The United States’ southern border has been overwhelmed by historic numbers of illegal migrants pouring into the country.

In 2023, U.S. Customs and Border Protection says it recorded more than 3.2 million encounters nationwide.

The growing number of migrants seeking entry into the United States at its border with Mexico has strained government resources, divided Congress and has emerged as a contentious issue in the 2024 presidential campaign.
