The Nasdaq is projected to end the week down over 4%, largely due to concerns about the profitability timelines of heavily indebted AI infrastructure firms.

Broadcom saw a decline of 3.6%, while the PHLX chip index dropped 2.5%, marking eight consecutive days of losses.

Oil prices spiked more than 3% on worries surrounding Middle Eastern supply disruptions, further unsettling traders.

Rob Haworth from U.S. Bank Wealth Management noted that high oil prices typically affect stock price/earnings ratios negatively, prompting investors to adopt a more cautious approach ahead of the weekend.

Concerns over AI financing persist as some investors consider a lower valuation for Anthropic ahead of its upcoming IPO.

The S&P 500 decreased by 1.22% to 7,649.71 points, while the Nasdaq fell 2.19% to 26,128.13 points.

Next week’s earnings reports from Tesla, Meta Platforms, and Procter & Gamble are anticipated, with expectations for a quarterly earnings increase of over 30%.

Despite the S&P 500 being up approximately 12% this year, the rise has been substantially driven by AI-related tech stocks.

Economic outlook

Hotter inflation readings this week suggest price pressures are extending beyond energy commodities.

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh expressed optimism regarding U.S. economic resilience amid persistent energy challenges and tight monetary policy.

Markets predict that interest rates will remain unchanged this month, with expected increases in December and January.

Tesla shares dropped by 2.5% following an announcement regarding a redesigned Roadster, developed with SpaceX.

Netflix appointed Peter Rice as chief content officer, resulting in its shares falling by 2.9%.

Declining stocks outnumbered those that rose within the S&P 500 by a 1.3-to-one ratio.

The S&P 500 marked 19 new highs and one new low, while the Nasdaq registered 49 new highs and 263 new lows.
