Two-thirds of Australians support reducing immigration numbers, according to a Newspoll.The poll indicates that 44% of Labor voters also favour lower immigration rates amid ongoing political debates.

52% of respondents view immigration’s impact as a mix of benefits and drawbacks.

The survey, which included 1244 voters, found that 37% wanted significantly fewer immigrants, while 29% preferred just fewer.

Only 4% wanted more immigrants, and 2 per cent wanted significantly more.

28% of Australians supported maintaining current immigration levels despite ongoing concerns over record numbers.

The Newspoll’s results align with a similar survey from October last year.

As political parties clash over immigration policy ahead of upcoming projections, Mr Taylor is expected to announce the Coalition’s targets soon.

Labor has pledged to lower immigration to 225,000 by 2027-28, while One Nation aims for 130,000.

Support for fewer immigrants is strongest among One Nation supporters at 95 per cent, followed by 76% of Coalition supporters.

Only 44% of Labor voters and 29% of Greens voters supported lowering immigration.

 

In contrast, 47% of Labor voters and 56% of Greens voters want to maintain current immigration levels.

The Intergenerational Report states immigration will drive population growth through the 2060s.

Migration is expected to stabilize at 235,000 annually after 2027-28 according to Treasury estimates.

Cultural diversity is highlighted as beneficial for Australia’s economy in the report.

The latest statistics show net immigration fell to 292,137, the highest level since June 2009, despite post-pandemic levels.
