Netflix in court over defamation of top prosecutor

Netflix is heading to the courtroom

The popular streaming service is set to face a defamation lawsuit by former Manhattan prosecutor Linda Fairstein.

Fairstein claims Netflix portrayed her as a racist and unethical villain in the 2019 series “When They See Us,”

After the series premiere, a hashtag “Cancel Linda Fairstein” called for a boycott of the best-selling crime novelist.

U.S. District Judge Kevin Castel in Manhattan stated that Ms. Fairstein had plausibly alleged defamation in up to five scenes, including that she withheld evidence, coerced confessions and directed a racially discriminatory police roundup of young men in Harlem.

“The average viewer could conclude that these scenes have a basis in fact and do not merely reflect the creators’ opinions about controversial historical events,”

U.S. District Judge Kevin said.

Netflix is yet to respond.
