“It’s a fight in every state”: the U.S voting rights debate

US Democrats are racing against the clock to strike a deal on a sweeping election overhaul.

The Senate is set to vote on the “For the People Act” this week, which is expected to fall short of the 60 votes it needs to move forward.

Those in favour of the proposed legislation believe it will expand voter access, reduce the influence of money in politics and create new laws of ethics around officeholders.

However, the bill has received intense backlash from Republicans, who say it will unfairly favour the Democrats.

House Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says the Republican party is “a hornet’s nest of conspiracy theories and voter suppression in the states”

Meanwhile, Senator Bernie Sanders told The Hill that any attempt to prevent the American public from voting is unacceptable.

Bruce Wolpe, Senior Fellow at the US Studies Centre says the world will be watching this battle to see what America’s democracy is all about.
