Biden’s bold plan to release Americans jailed in Russia

Joe Biden has plans to meet with the families of the two Americans jailed in Russia, basketball star Brittney Griner and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan

The meeting comes more than a month after the White House announced it had provided Moscow with a deal for their release.

Griner has a sentence of nine years over drug charges, while Whelan was sentenced to 16 years for spying allegations, allegations he firmly denies.

Back in July, Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters the White House made a “substantial offer” to secure the return of the two Americans.

Sources believe Russian arms trafficker Viktor Bout, a man currently held in a U.S. prison, could be released in an exchange.

Russia responded saying officials are engaged in “quiet diplomacy” about a potential prisoner swap.

There have been little to no developments since.
