Albanese expels Iranian ambassador citing state’s involvement in antisemitic attacks against Jewish community in Australia
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the expulsion of Iran’s ambassador to Australia, citing the country’s involvement in antisemitic attacks within Australia.
Albanese’s decision follows findings from ASIO suggesting that Iran directed numerous assaults against Jewish interests.
ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess indicated that the agency uncovered links between the Iranian government and the incidents.
He stated that the investigation revealed Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) orchestrated at least two attacks.
The Prime Minister also announced that the IRGC will be designated a terrorist organisation.
Iran’s Actions
Albanese highlighted specific incidents connected to this claim, including the attack on the Adass Israel synagogue in Melbourne and Continental Kitchen in Sydney.
Furthermore, he confirmed that the Australian embassy in Tehran would suspend operations and that all diplomats are currently safe in a third country. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for local police efforts amid this evolving situation.
