Sydney lockdown to be extended, but for how long?

Australia continues to battle COVID

The Australian state of New South Wales is announcing it will extend the current COVID-19 lockdown for another week

The state’s premier, Gladys Berejiklian will address the media at 11 am local time today about the potential Sydney lockdown. This comes after a crisis Covid-19 cabinet meeting overnight. 

More than 330 locally acquired Covid-19 cases have been recorded since mid-June, and New South Wales was thrown into a strict lockdown 12 days ago. 

Under the continuing restrictions, residents will only be able to leave their homes for essentials reasons such as shopping, exercise, or for medical reasons including to receive their Covid-19 vaccine. 

Rising case numbers concern for other states

It follows premiers from around the country slamming the country’s federal government for its slow Covid-19 vaccine roll-out. The roll-out is due to ramp up by September or October this year. 

Berejiklian says “the Delta strain is different” and that is why Sydney must lock down.
