Disney now has as many subscribers as Netflix

The streaming wars are heating up, with Disney levelling the playing field

Disney has surpassed streaming rival Netflix with the number of subscribers.

It’s the first time the company has recorded such a feat.

Chief Executive Bob Chapek says the company added 14.4 million subscribers to its Disney+ service.

Overall, the franchise has 221 million total subscriptions across its streaming offerings of Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+.

That compares to Netlfix’s reported 220.67 million total global subscribers.

“We had an excellent quarter, with our world-class creative and business teams powering outstanding performance at our domestic theme parks, big increases in live-sports viewership, and significant subscriber growth at our streaming services.”

It is the first time any competitor has passed Netflix on the number of total subscribers.

Chapek is also rolling out a new pricing strategy to include ads, which is ahead of Netflix’s new offerings.

The company says it will charge less than Netflix in North America but may need a little fairy dust to keep the momentum rolling in the ever-growing streaming space.
