EU moving back to coal amid Russian gas crisis

Published

There are fears for European residents after the E-U was told to prepare for Russia to turn off all gas exports to region

EU officials say a tight gas market and soaring prices has left no option but to seek alternative fuel sources.

Flows through through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline have been cut to 40% of capacity, following increasing sanctions on Moscow.

Individual governments are now attempting to soften the blow for their nation’s people, with Italy approving a $3.5 billion package to bring down energy bills.

The International Energy Agency says Europe must replace Russian energy supplies while boosting efficiency and renewables, including nuclear power.

Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands have all indicated coal-fired power plants could fix supply gaps.

This comes despite Germany preparing to host a Group of Seven summit, reaffirming climate change commitments.
