Tensions between China and the US are at an all-time high, as the Biden administration is expected to announce its strategy towards mending relations with Beijing.

It comes as pressure mounts on Biden to make a clear public commitment to defend Taiwan and its military against China’s growing influence.

US laws state that the country must step in to assist Taiwan in times of conflict, but it has long relied on the “strategic ambiguity” defence to get out of doing this.

China believes Taiwan is a “rebel province” and says it will one day return and be part of the mainland’s authority.

As China grows restless, experts believe “the time has come for the United States to introduce a policy of strategic clarity.”
